Work
Stress
Leigh Adams - 3rd August 2009

Over the years we seem to have become busier and busier. You look at the clock one minute and then again a bit
later and the time has traveled a million miles an hour.
In the meantime your mobile is ringing, your email is dinging, your desk phone is ringing, your messenger
application is flashing, and your PDA is collecting emails by the dozen. How many ways can work and home contact
you today?
It seems like we now live in a 24hr economy, where nothing stops. Because you have the technology, everyone seems
to think you are available all the time. You have obligations to your family and your children. But an email comes
in on your pda. Do you look at it?
Are you fearful that if you don't reply, you will be seen as not being committed to your work? Your boss is
working late and needs an answer to his question. Do you answer your phone or not?
Trying to juggle too many balls is extremely difficult in today's economy. The pressure of work and home life can
be astronomical. Do employers really encourage Work Life Balance? I believe in a lot of cases they do. It is your
own adjustment to these scenarios which really count.
You have a 9a.m meeting but you have to take your kids to school and nursery... Do you cancel it? Or do you rush
around all over the place and try to get to work. Breathing desperately hard as you begin your call. Or do you sit
in the car and take the call because you cannot get there in time?
You have to leave early from work to pick the kids up? You are trying to work and look after the kids at the same
time!!!!!! Just how do you do it?
Well it takes a lot of time to adjust to these scenarios. Good time management, stress management, anxiety
management. You name it; you have to learn all these things and more. Life is challenging in these
times.
Most of the people I speak to at work are in fear of losing their jobs. Negativity has never been so bad in my
eyes. Is it because we have lived to our means and are struggling to make ends meet? Or is it because there are not
enough hours in the day?
The recession is hitting badly. Well you can see why it is difficult to cope with modern day life. So how do you
cope? What do you do to relax? How do you switch off?
